  History of Senior Matters

The firm, Senior Matters Extended Services, LLC, is an expansion of Senior Matters Consulting, Inc., founded in 1997 by Mary Katherine Bagnal. MSW, CMC, RG, the Chief Executive Officer of Senior Matters.  Ms. Bagnal established Senior Matters Consulting, Inc. out of a need she saw for care management and advocacy for older adults and disabled individuals.

In 2006, she partnered with David Splittgerber, CPA, RG, the Chief Operating Officer of Senior Matters.  Before joining Senior Matters, Mr. Splittgerber was the Vice President of Finance with Lutheran Homes of South Carolina.  He worked for Lutheran Homes for twelve years.  Mr. Splittgerber has served on finance and stewardship committees with Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Seven Oaks Presbyterian Pre-School Board.

In November 2006, Senior Matters opened a non-medical home care company, In Home Matters, which provides caregiver / companions to clients. This concept was created to promote continuity of care for the company's clients. The management of the company is committed to quality care.  The caregiver / companion staff is trained to understand how to integrate the care plan developed by the Professional Geriatric Care Manager into the care they provide to the clients.

Senior Matters and In Home Matters take the hiring responsibility seriously by performing national criminal background checks, driver’s license checks for violations, and drug screenings on all potential employees. The company that performs the background check provides Senior Matters and In Home Matters with a nationwide search by counties of past residency. All of our employees are bonded and given a PPD test (also known as a TB test).  In Home Matters caregiver / companions are provided with a company ID that identifies their employment with the company. Quarterly training programs are required for the caregiver / companions that address issues of safety, quality of life and health promotion.

The purpose of the company is to provide citizens in the Midlands a service that enhances the quality of life for older adults, disabled adults, and their families. The mission of Senior Matters is to “bring peace of mind” to the client through the knowledge and expertise of trained qualified professionals who develop care plans, intervene, and advocate for individuals experiencing a personal or medical crises. Ms. Bagnal has often been heard telling a client and / or his or her family, that a Professional Geriatric Care Manager’s (PCGM) intervention and support can change a situation from being a reactive event to a proactive process.
