As we age, we all have physical complaints that we think are just part of getting older. Many of these problems are the result of less physical activity and improper diets. A healthy diet and the right amount of exercise can greatly increase our energy levels – at any age.
Senior citizens stop eating a healthy diet for many reasons. If they live alone, they often believe it is too much trouble to cook a meal for just one person. Many seniors do not have transportation available to get to the store as regularly as they should. As we age, our sense of smell and taste may change which will affect how food tastes and may make eating less enjoyable. Some medications can affect the way food tastes and chewing may become more difficult as we grow older.
As part of our Geriatric Care Management, nutritional needs of the client are addressed. Senior Matters has a Registered Dietician on staff to assess the nutritional needs of the client and assist the client as needed with meal planning and other dietary needs and concerns.
Medline Plus, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institute on Health, has great information on nutritional needs and physical activity needs for seniors. To learn more about nutrition CLICK HERE. For more information about seniors and physical activity CLICK HERE.
