- There were 36.3 million people 65+ in 2004. Estimates are that in 2050, the over 65 population will be 86.7 million
- 43% of people 65+ in South Carolina have some type of disability
- 47% of the population 85+ have a disability that prevents them from leaving their home
- 52% of Grandparents in South Carolina have grandchildren living with them (more than 25% of these grandparents are the sole caregiver for their grandchildren)
- A person who was 65 in 2003 can expect to live to be 83.4

- One in four households is involved in caring for a loved one aged 50 and over
- Between one-third and one-half of all caregivers are also employed outside of the home
- Working caregivers often:
- Sacrifice leisure and relaxation
- Suffer stress related illnesses
- Lose career opportunities and have lower future earnings as a result
